Feel Good Friday - Blessings

Its Feel Good Friday!!!!

A Chasing Joy follower of commented on The Road To Joy post stating "We've Got It Pretty Damn Good". Well I totally agree. A large component to happiness, and therefore Joy, is gratitude. Everyone has something to be grateful / thankful for. Focusing on those things will definitely make you feel good. If you are busy counting blessings you have no time for self pity, doubt, complaining, pessimism, or any other activities that distract us from the pursuit of Joy and make us fall prey to Joy Thieves or even worse become Joy Thieves ourselves (remember it's contagious). So today I will count my blessings (as I find myself doing more and more).

I feel good today because:

I am alive and healthy today
I have a job
It is Friday and I get off an hour early
I get to sleep in on the weekend (I need some zzzzzzzs!!)
I was able to help someone this week with resume stuff
I had a new comment on The Road to Joy post (I absolutly love, love, love when you comment)
It is not so hot today, only in the 80s
I have a desire to be grateful
Despite any hardships I have or will face I know I have a much easier life than many, if not most women my age, especially those from other less developed countries.
I have the ability to read and write (I cannot imagine my live without these gifts)
I have a desire to write and think I'm pretty good at it
Of course I feel good because I am Chasing Joy along with you

Feel free to Share your blessings here. What are you feeling good about this Feel Good Friday?

Keeping it Simple on Feel Good Friday

Happy Feel Good Friday!!!

I came across these Funny Stories on

I was teaching a very basic class in BASIC programming to a group of adults. Adults who have never been around computers before are very nervous and much harder to teach than children, however I am a patient person so I enjoy their successes.

However, I must share the following:

After putting a short program on the board, I told the students to type "R," "U," "N" and press return to see the program execute.

A hand went up in the back of the room, waving to get my attention, and the person attached to the hand said, "I did what you said and it didn't work." Knowing full-well that all of us make mistakes when typing at the computer, I suggested she retype "R," "U," "N" and press return. A few seconds later, the lady's hand goes up again. "It still doesn't work," she said.

So... I went back to see what the problem was ... only to find that instead of typing RUN, she had typed in the following: ARE YOU IN !
Medical Problem

An old woman came into her doctor's office and confessed to an embarrassing problem. "I do that all the time, Doctor Johnson, but they're soundless, and they have no odor. In fact, since I've been here, I did it no less than twenty times. What can I do?"

"Here's a prescription, Mrs. Harris. Take these pills three times a day for seven days and come back and see me in a week."

Next week an upset Mrs. Harris marched into Dr. Johnson's office. "Doctor, I don't know what was in those pills, but the problem is worse! I'm doing it just as much, but now it smells terrible! What do you have to say for yourself?"

"Calm down, Mrs. Harris," said the doctor soothingly. "Now that we've fixed your sinuses, we'll work on your hearing!!!"

I hope these stories have given you a little smile and giggle. There is a little life lesson though. The simplest option is often the best choice. Don't over think things or make them more complicated than necessary. Of course I need to take my own advice :-)

Have a great Feel Good Friday!!!! What's making you feel good today???

A Case of the Mondays

You know that feeling you get when you approach your work place on Monday morning. You feel the dread as you get closer. You start thinking of all the projects you did not finish on Friday, the emails, and voicemails that will be waiting for you. Oh how you wish you were still in bed. How did the weekend go so fast? How can it be Monday all ready? This is commonly known as having "a case of the Mondays".

I felt myself coming down with a case of the Mondays this morning as I approached my building. However, I decided not today. To fight off the case of the Mondays I was coming down with. I started to think up all the reasons I should have a Joy filled Monday. Here is what I came up with.

I am happy this Monday because:

1. I woke up.
2. So did my pets (this is something you think about when you have and old dog and an old cat)
3. I awoke without pain or discomfort.
4. I woke up in a cool house (thanks to air conditioning) that I own, without fear of foreclosure or eviction.
5. I arrived safely to work without car trouble.
6. I have a decent job that allows me to provide for myself
7. I do not hate my job and enjoy the company of most of my co-workers.
8. My supervisor is off on Mondays so I can ease into my work week.
9. I can get back into my healthy eating and exercise routine (the weekend is always harder)
10. I am one day closer to the weekend :-)

Take precaution against coming down with a case of the Mondays. Tell me, why is today a Joy Filled Monday (or Tuesday or whatever day you read this) for you???

Happy Monday!!!

Feel Good Friday - Week in Review

Friday Yay!!!
How fast this week has gone. Are you Feeling Good??? I hope you all have fun and exciting plans for the weekend. Before you get all busy with your plans, in the spirit of Feel Good Friday let’s take a moment to reflect on the good things that happened this week.

  • Top of my list is BP stopping the oil leak!!! About damn time.

  • The Boys & Girls Clubs of America will earn more than $2.5 million (with another up-to-$1 million matched by James' sponsor Nike) from the Lebron James announcement. – Link

  • 70,000 Gulf Sea Turtle’s will be saved from the oil - Link

  • Philadelphia and partners of NeighborWorks America announced a campaign to fight against foreclosure bailout scams. FYI if you think you or someone you know may have been scammed here are the contact numbers. …Save Your Home Philly hotline number = 215-334-HOME (4663), The national hotline = 1-800-995-HOPE (4673) -Link

  • New Jersey is getting closer to legalizing medical marijuana. (I know any news related to legalizing weed will make some of you feel good) - Link

  • "Lose the Training Wheels" camp is coming to Philadelphia. The camp helps Special Needs Children learn to bike ride without training wheels. I LOVE THIS!!! – Link

In addition to things in the news there were several personal things that made me feel good this week.

  • Saturday – playing with my friend’s new puppy and all the babies at her nephew’s b-day party. Nothing makes you smile like babies, puppies, and kittens (shame there were no kittens at the party but then I guess that would have been a bit much :-)

  • Sunday – not running into a few people I’d rather not see while having Chinese food (Real Chinese food not the American version of it. The kind Asian people eat. No chicken and broccoli, or General Tso in sight) in their neighborhood.

  • Monday – Setting a new personal best by jogging 30 min on the treadmill. I will get to those 3 miles (see Devil's Workshop)

  • Tuesday – Book Club always makes me feel good. I also made a decision on how to handle a situation that had been weighing heavily on me.

  • Wednesday – I won the weight loss challenge at my job this week. I have the crown until next Wednesday when it goes to the new winner. What if I win two weeks in a row???

  • Thursday – Zumba I always have fun in there, despite the pain.

  • Every day this week – The voting started for the Miss Curve 2011 contest. (Link) I am a contestant. Every day friends have been voting for me, leaving the nicest comments about me, texting, emailing, and facbooking me with well wishes and messages of support. Also, my virtual trainer blogged about me. Everyone’s support has made me feel so special. It is so wonderful to be reminded of who is in your corner.

What made you feel good this past week??? Please share so we all can feel good along with you.

Beware the Joy Thief

Beware the Joy Thief
They are all around us. They look like us, talk like us, and dress like us. They are at our jobs, schools, even our churches. The are our family members and sometimes our friends. They blend in and are often hard to spot. But, there are signs.

  • They always have something to complain about

  • They always have a reason for not attempting to change negative situations

  • They constantly need support but never offer it

  • If you have a problem they always have a bigger one

  • If you have a goal they are quick to point out the obstacles in your path

  • They discourage others from pursuing goals, taking chances, or making change

  • They often talk more than they listen during conversations

  • Even when they ask your advice they don't take it and have a reason they know it won't work

  • They are very critical and quick to judge others

  • They are overly concerned with things like clothing, status, and gossip

  • They are not trustworthy or consistent

  • They are more than willing to promote themselves at the expense of others (even those they call a friend)

  • They do not keep their word

  • They are pessimistic and quick to see the negative in every situation

  • They'd get an Oscar for playing the Victim

  • They often go by the names Hater, Backstabber , Two Faced of Fake

  • The most important Sign, You Always Feel Worse (tired, down, drained or stressed) after spending time with them.

BEWARE THE JOY THIEF!!!! They are everywhere. Learn to spot them and avoid them. Their condition is contagious and you can become infected.

How do you avoid and/or deal with Joy Thieves???

Feel Good Friday - Dollar Dollar Bills Yall!!!

There are many things that make me feel good - time with loved ones, certain foods, shopping, even writing this blog. But there is one thing that give me a special kind of feel good, having a few extra dollars in my pocket. That's right money. I know money is the route of all evil and what not, but money also gives you freedom. Freedom to splurge in your favorite store or restaurant, surprise that love one with a little gift, or even do something for your self like book that massage you have been thinking about. Money also gives you the freedom to make big moves like quiting your job and pursuing your dream or moving when you don't like the way your neighborhood is changing.

This Feel Good Friday I'm thinking about money, money, money, money, money (in my O Jay's Voice). So let's list our favorite money savings tips. If we save some money now. We'll have extra money and freedom later.

  • Use a budget. It can be as detailed or as simple as you like. A simple budget would be take home pay minus necessities (food, bills, transportation, etc), minus savings equals spending money.
  • Pay yourself first. Put aside some money for emergency savings aside before you do anything else. Even if it is just $5 a pay. It will add up.
  • Use an online bank for a savings account. The online banks tend to have better rates. You can use savings account to move the money you want to save away from the account you use regularly. That way it is not really on your mind and the interest grows while your not thinking about it.
  • Use a list when you go to the market. You will have less impulse buys.
  • When ever you have coins save them. I just took all the change from my dresser to the bank and it totaled $47.00.
  • Do Not lend money that you cannot afford to give away.
  • Use coupons.
  • Bring food to work for meals and snacks instead of buying breakfast and lunch and hitting the vending machine. This is also good for the waistline.
  • Use the library instead of buying books.

While money cannot buy you Joy, it can provide the means for you to explore new hobbies and indulgences that will bring you closer to Joy.

What are your favorite money saving tips???

6 Months Later - Almost

It has been almost six months since my pursuit started. In the end of January after a few curve balls from life I started Chasing Joy. I have to say, even in this short time, this has been an amazing experience and I have gotten a lot out of it.

I started this blog as a collection of my thoughts, happy, sad, deep, meaningful, shallow or trivial and a form of self expression during a difficult time in my life. I hoped to use the blog as a springboard toward happiness, to find out what joy is for me and escape the sense of boredom that has always plagued me.

Mission Accomplished!!! Well, sort of. I like to think that difficult time is behind me. I still have my down moments but they are fewer and further between. I think this is due mostly to just the passage of time and not necessarily my pursuit of Joy. However, Chasing Joy has really helped me to escape boredom, so much so that I kind of wish I named the blog simply Chasing Joy instead of Chasing Joy or Maybe Just Running from Boredom. Any time I am feeling bored I simply write a blog post or post something to the fan page on Facebook or post a Tweet on Twitter. I’ve not completely conquered boredom and put that Devil’s Workshop out of business but we are definitely moving into FINAL SALE territory.

This blog has helped explore new activities and ideas in pursuit of Joy. So far I have:
-Taken Ballet
-Visited Bermuda
-Dyed my hair red (post coming soon)
-Learned the importance of making my alone time special
-Danced in the Mirror Naked

Projects in process include:
-Being able to jog 3 miles nonstop
-Doing men’s pushups
-Fit into a single digit size

The blog has helped me to strengthen my commitment to my health and improving my self esteem and self image. Since January I have been treating my body more like a temple. As a result I have lost about 8lbs and entered into the Miss Curve contest.

An unexpected result of me writing the blog has been a change in the way I view friendship. I have really given more thought to how friends have affect my Joy and how I affect their's. Am I putting in the time, especially face to face, needed to maintain strong friendships? Am I holding on to certain relationships because of what they once were as opposed to how they are currently? I have honestly been shocked by some who have been extremely supportive of my writing and others who have been either indifferent or unsupportive. This has lead me to recognize that I want to be the kind of person who supports friends and definitely supports those who support me.

Overall the greatest result of writing this blog has been a new perspective. Joy is always in my sights. I am always looking for things that make me happy or for the bright side of negative situations for my next blog topic or Feel Good Friday post. I look for positive quotes each day to list on the Joyful Quotes page and share on both the Facebook fan page and twitter. I am much less negative, more hopeful, and more confident. So, I will continue my pursuit and Chase Joy with more and more vigor. I’m beginning to think my friend Marcia hit the nail on the head when she said, “Keep Chasing Joy. I think the fun may be in the hunt!"

Feel Good Friday Pageant, Ready For the Crown

Happy Happy Friday!!!. It is Feel Good Friday once again.

This blog is all about my finding Joy and part of that includes me focusing on wellness and health and therefore losing some weight. I’ve touched on this in previous posts My Body My Temple and The Temples Foundation. Now even though I have a few pounds to lose to get my Temple in tip top shape I do like my body. I like my curves and my over all shape. So in the spirit of celebrating the body I have even though I am still working to improve it I entered the 2011 Miss Curve Contest. This is a beauty pageant for plus size women. This is not something I would normally do. However, I have realized in order to embrace Joy I may have to search for it outside of my comfort zone. So, in the spirit of Feel Good Friday and my upcoming competition I am poking a little bit of fun at Pageants.

Here are a few funny Pageant quotes:
At the 2007 Miss Teen USA Pageant, Miss Teen South Carolina was asked why one fifth of Americans can't locate the USA on a world map. She replied... "I personally believe that US Americans are unable to do so because some people out there in our nation don't have maps, and I believe that our education like such as South Africa, and the Iraq, everywhere like, such as, and I believe that they should, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., or should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for our children." -- Lauren Caitlin Upton, Miss Teen South Carolina.

Here is the video of Miss Teen South Carolina.

Upon being crowned "Little Miss Cherub," a three-year-old girl waved an envelope containing her scholarship at her mother watching from the audience and yelled, "Mommy, I got mail!"

By the end of the 1930s a disgruntled talent scout at the Miss America Pageant complained to Holiday magazine, "I'm telling you, culture and respectability have ruined the Miss America Pageant!"

When asked to give her astrological sign, Miss Sri Lanka 1985 replied, "Oh, I don't have any."

During one memorable moment at a Miss World Pageant, the short master of ceremonies couldn't resist teasing Miss United Kingdom, a six-foot-tall beauty who towered over him. "And what are you going to be when you grow up?" he asked. "I don't know," the finalist replied without a smile. "What are you going to be when you grow up?"

During the 1993 Ms. Senior Palm Beach County Pageant, the pageant director asked one entrant to name her life goals. "Honey," replied the 75-year-old contestant, "I don't even buy green bananas!"

What do you think of these Pageant Titles?”
Queen of the Road
Miss Most Kissable Lips
Mr. and Miss Scratch Ankle
Underwater Queen
Miss Rural Electrification
Miss Hell Hole Swamp
Miss Fire Ant
Miss Black Eye Pea
Miss Chile Pepper
Pow Wow Queen
Miss Tush
Most Glamorous Grandmother
Swine Queen
Pork Princess
Miss Snake Charmer
Miss Wet T-shirt
Mrs. Drumstick
Miss Blue Devil
Miss Pregnant
Miss Klingon Empire
Miss Artificial Beauty
Miss Jumbo Queen
Miss Atom
Sister Italia – A Pageant for Nuns
Miss Condom
Miss Mama Kilo

And last but not least here are a few pageant videos including a fall and two wig mishaps. EnJoy.
