I am in Philadelphia where we have been blessed with really good weather so far this winter.  But when I came out of work this evening I saw the first flurries of the season.   Winter is here and the temperatures are going to drop, snow and ice will follow.  I guess now is the time for me to close my eyes and imagine myself on a nice warm tropical island.  So for this weeks Flashback I am Flashing back to the post I wrote after returning from my Bermuda Cruise vacation, Chased Joy All The Way to Bermuda.  Oh to be on vacation again.  Where would you rather be right now?

Be sure to check out AT LEAST TWO other Flashback posts. Might I suggest the ones listed before and after your post. Please leave a comment saying why you selected your Flashback post and what you thought about the other Flashback posts. I'm looking forward to reading all of your Flashbacks.

Hunt for Joy & the Winner is!!!

Reactions:
Happy Holidays Joy Chasers!!!  Happy Hanukkah, Merry Christmas, Happy Kwanzaa and all that good stuff.  I hope your holidays are as pleasant as mine was.

A little background for you. Growing up my dad liked to make the Holidays (Christmas in my house) a lot of fun.  He'd start counting down to Christmas very early,  Christmas music starting in October, going to see and letters to Santa, etc...   But what he found the most fun was always playing some sort of trick on my mom.  He'd enlist me and my brother to help him but the ideas were always his.  One year he gave her a fur coat (sorry PETA peeps) but he took the coat out of the box and replaced it with an old dusty coat from our basement.  Another year he gave her a ring and had my brother and I wrap it in a huge box with a bunch of newspaper and a dusty brick inside for weight.

A few times my mom has gotten me back for my collaborating with him.  One year she got me a disc man (Remember those predecessors to MP3 players?) but she put it in a Payless box.  So when I unwrapped my gift I thought I was getting some Payless shoes for Christmas.  Last year for my Birthday I got a little Coach Gift box.  But when I opened the box I found a dusty old change purse with a broken zipper.  After her laugh she gave me my nice Coach wristlet.

This year I was having a hard time coming up with an idea to make our gift giving extra fun.  And then it came to me, A Scavenger Hunt!!!  On Christmas day after we had opened our other gifts I gave my mom a little gift bag filed with Hershey Kisses and a note.  The note said It's Christmas time let's have some fun, your scavenger hunt has just begun :-)  I am bronze and made from shoes under me you will find clue #2!!

That clue took her into her bedroom where she has a lamp that has a base made from my baby shoes that have been bronzed.  There I'd placed a red envelope with a note that red Look in the tree you just might see, a little something called clue #3.

From there she made her way back into her living room to search the Christmas Tree for clue #3.  In the tree I had placed a little zip lock bag with more Hershey kisses and another note.  She found it after a minute or so of staring at the tree.  This clue stated On to the porch where we keep Hurt's (our dog) leach, you may find something that cannot be beat!! :-)

Out onto our porch she went.  On top of the cat tower where we keep the dog leashes she found a little box wrapped in gold wrapping paper.  I am sure she thought she'd finally gotten to the gift.  Wrong!!!  Inside of the little wrapped box was more kisses and another note that said Up the stairs under the coats, you are getting closer to what you want the most!!

Now she heads up the stairs from her apartment into mine.  She looks on the banister where I tend to leave my coat when I come in and taped to the post was another, yes another, note with a little Christmas bow on it.  The note said Don't be annoyed it's all in good fun. Your scavenger hunt is almost done.  In the kitchen, open the door and look inside, there you will find clue #5.

When we were in the kitchen I was really laughing now.  Do you know how many doors there are in a kitchen?  Cabinet doors, oven doors, refrigerator doors, pantry doors, doors to other rooms, toaster oven doors, and don't forget the microwave's door.  She was opening everything and I kept saying there are more doors, there are more doors.  Finally she opened the door to the toaster oven and found an little piece of paper with a Chrismas bow on it.  This was her final clue and it said Go to the other room now open the door. Your Christmas gift is on the floor!! :-)

Of course the first room she opened the door to was my living room door, no gift there.  Second she opened the bathroom door, no gift there.  Finally she opened the last door to my bedroom, and on the floor she found her gift.  A new 22inch flat screen TV to replace the one from her bedroom that had died a few weeks ago.
Santa Hurt helping me wrap mom's TV

I had so much fun setting up and watching her do this scavenger hunt.  It can be just as much fun to give as it is to receive.

And in the spirit of giving I know you are waiting to hear who won the surprise It's My Blog So I Can Do What I Want  #100ActsofJoy give away.  The winner is.............. Flashback Friday: Letter to Dad

Reactions:
Happy Friday Joy Chasers!!! Today is Christmas Eve's Eve as my Dad would say.  I hope you are ready for Chrismas?  Christmas is a sentimental and nostalgic time of year.  I often hear people talking about their best Cristmas ever or what their childhood Christmases were like.  While this weeks Flashback is not about Christmas it is about a person who made sure it was never "the year of the bad Christmas" for me.  I am Flashing back to my post Letter to Dad.  I have found writing him letters to be helpful for me.  Have you ever written a letter to a loved one who has passed?  Did you find it helpful? Or, do you find the idea weird or errie?

If you are brand new to Chasing Joy and are unfamilar with Flashback Friday it is where we Flashback to our older blog posts and linkup here.  You can also post a link to your Flashback post on the Chasing Joy Facebook Page. Flashback Friday is a great way to rediscover our earlier work and discover some new blogs. 12 Things I Don't Need to Have a More Joyful 2012

Reactions:
from google images
A few weeks ago while reading some other blogs I kept coming across the theme Reverb.  I also started seeing it as a hashtag on twitter, #Reverb.  Finally I figured out what it is.  Reverb is a way of reflecting on the end of the year and the year to come.  I liked the idea so I signed up to get Reverb writing prompts via email.

I have received a few Reverb emails but had not had a chance to write a response to any of the prompts.  But when I got this one I was determined to do it.  This Reverb is 12 Things My Life Does Not Need in 2012.  So here is  my list ( yall know I love lists) :
  1. Debt
  2. Excess Weight
  3. Clutter
  4. Fear
  5. Dehydration
  6. Addiction
  7. Loneliness
  8. Control
  9. Lateness
  10. Ego
  11. Guilt
  12. Shame
OK, so I'll elaborate on my list a little.  Cant have you thinking I'm some sort of broke, fat, scared, lonesome, dry mouthed, hoarder, addict, control freak who's never on time filled with guilt and shame, yet thinks she's better than everyone else.  Hmmm.  That sentence was meant to be funny but it is actually kind of scary to imagine myself, even jokingly, in that way.  Good thing I am not taking fear into 2012.
  1. OK so this is a bit of a confession.  I am really really good with money.  In theory.  I know what to do but have not always been good at doing it.  In particular when my circumstances have changed I have not made adjustments to my budget.  For example when my dad died there was about a 6 to 9 month period where I was not getting the money I was used to getting for my parents share of the rent.  Eventually all the red tape stuff with social security was taken care of and I was receiving normal rent payments again.  None of that was a problem.  I could afford to pay the entire mortgage myself.  The problem though was I could not afford to pay the entire mortgage and still shop, go out to eat, and get my hair done the way I always had.  But instead cutting back my spending during those few months I kept right on spending as though nothing had changed.  Throw in a couple pet emergencies and here I am now 2 years later still carrying that debt.  I have made recent changes and dents in the debt.  But I definitely do not need to carry this debt and living above my means through 2012.
  2. I've been working on my weight consistently for a few years now. I have been making better choices and exercises.  But then I slack off and the fast food and snacks sneak back in.  I have been really good about not giving up and always getting back on the healthy band wagon.  I just have to stay focused and not throw in the towel. Excess weight is something I definitely don't need to carry through 2012.
  3. My mom said it best a few weeks ago.  If someone meet me in person they'd see how well put together I am.  Then if I invited them over they'd be shocked at how messy my house is.  Not dirty but messy.  Messy as in stuff everywhere.  My car is a little give away as I have things in the trunk that I have not bothered to put away in the house.  I have been working on this already and things have improved.  I have gotten rid of more things that I don't use or wear.  I have invested in more storage solutions.  The biggest thing is that I have set aside some time the last few Sundays to just clean.  Clutter is something I don't need to carry through 2012.
  4. So this one is the big one.  FEAR. I have only recently realized how much fear I am carrying with me.  Fear of rejection.  Fear of being alone. Fear of disappointment and disappointing others.  Fear of confrontation and also Fear of being taken advantage of.  It is a really uncomfortable space wedged in between all of this Fear.  At least I am starting to see things clearly and seeing the fear for what it really is...in the way and blocking my Joy.  Fear is definitely something I don't need to carry into 2012.
  5. This one is pretty basic and goes along with my letting go of excess weight.  Water water water.  I need to make this a priority.  Water is the best hydration there is and is great for clear skin and a trim waist.  Dehydration will not be accompanying me into 2012.
  6. No I am not a crack addict, meth addict, or any other kind of drug addict.  I am entirely to vain for that.  Have you seen what that stuff does to  you???   What I am addicted to is sugar!!!  OK I said it but I still am not ready to admit I have a problem.  I don't want to give it up.  It makes me feel so good!!!  That is until I am falling asleep because my body does not process it well .  That is until my pants don't fit because I have had 1, 2, OK 5 too many snack cakes.  While I don't want to cut sugar out of my life completely, I know I must conquer my addiction to it.  I don't need to carry a sugar addiction with me through 2012.
  7. This one I have been working on.  I will continue with my efforts to find a Joy Chasing partner.  I will be more open minded and willing to meet new and different people.  Life is more fun when you share it.  Joy can be greatly multiplied when it is shared.  I don't need to carry loneliness with me through 2012
  8. In addition to realizing I have been carrying a lot of fear around, I have also been living with an illusion.  I have mistakenly thought that if I did everything right, made the best decisions, dated the "right guys" and had a responsible job I could control the outcome of my life and ensure its Awesomeness.  I have been so wrong.  While their is nothing wrong with making the best decisions, dating the right guy, and having a responsible job, it will not guarantee you anything.  Life is full of surprises.  You cannot control it only your response to it, whether or not you will Chase Joy through the ups and the downs.  So I will not mistakenly attempt to carry control with me into 2012.
  9. This one is a new one for me.  I used to be on time all the time.  Now I am late all the time.  I think the route of the problem is prioritizing.  I'd rather be up late blogging, watching TV, talking, facebooking, twittering, and otherwise communicating with you Joy Chasers than going to bed at a reasonable time.  This translates into not being able to get up early enough to do everythinging I need to do to get out of the house on time.  In addition to the prioritizing problem I guess I am a bit of a late reactor.  Similar to what I was saying about not adjusting my spending to changing circumstances.  I have also not changed my routines when my circumstances changed.  I did not set aside any time in my day to care for my cat and then my dog.  I'm realizing tending to the feeding, cleaning, and care of these animals takes a lot of time that I have not made room for in my day.  I guess some things are going to have to change. I will not carry lateness with me into 2012.
  10. Hopefully this one is a bit of a surprise.  I do tend to think pretty highly of myself and have a pretty big ego.  Not in the I'm better than you kind of way.  But in the I should not make the same kinds of mistakes that everyone else does kind of way.  The I know I'm really smart so how could I let that happen to me kind of way.  All of this thinking so highly of myself creates a really self critical person.  So I know I need to let the ego go.  I have to stop holding myself to a higher standard than others and allow myself to make some mistakes.  From what I hear there is a lot of fun to be had in making mistakes.  Letting my ego go.  No room for ego in 2012.
  11. I don't know of any emotion that zaps Joy as much as guilt.  But this one I think I can conquer as long as I stay focused.  I happen to consider myself a Christian so, contrary to what you may think, this is a big help with guilt.  I have to just keep reminding myself not to be hypocritical.  If I say that I believe Jesus died for my sins.  Why am I walking around punishing myself for them. Jesus took care of them and it is God's job to judge not mine.  So staying focused on my faith should help me leave guilt behind and not take this Joy zapper into 2012.
  12. Now this is not the same as guilt.  For me shame has more to do with ego than remorse.  When I have fallen victim to other peoples negative actions and behaviors I have often found fault with myself.  I have felt shame that a person as smart and awesome as me could  be lied to, cheated on, used, and otherwise victimized.  This is because that ego steps in and says your not like everyone else you should have known better.  But I am sending shame packing along with the ego.  I accept that these things happen to everyone and I am no different from anyone else in that respect.  So there is no reason for me to feel ashamed and definitely no need to carry it into 2012.
Leaving these things behind should  make room for Joy in my life.  What do you need to leave behind to make room for more Joy in 2012???

HBBBS Part 4 and Giveaway

Reactions:
Here it is part 4 and the final installment in the How to be a Better Blogger Blogalicious Style (HBBBS) series. I could go on and on talking about all the things I did and learned at Be Blogalicious 2011. But I won’t. So, for my last post in this series I will share every other bit of knowledge I gained at the conference. Also, one Joy Chaser who has been following the HBBBS series will get to share in my swag bag!!!

Here goes:

  • Remember that YOU are your brand. Spend time, money, and thought on how you present yourself. How you present yourself in person and online are both important. You are what you tweet!!!
  • Do not think you have to be perfect. It is ok to be human, make mistakes, be uncomfortable, and or be scared. As a matter of fact these are the qualities that make you personable and allow your readers to relate to you.
  • Good Content on your blog is most important. But, you still have to make engagement with your followers top priority. If Content is King Engagement is Queen!!!
  • If you have business cards (I only just got mine) add your city and state to your card. This allows people to know what is local to you. Local businesses may find you to be the resource they are looking for.
  • Do a media Kit. I am sure I will be writing about this again. I had never heard of a media kit before the conference. The media kit should detail
    • Quantify traffic to your blog
    • Number of Twitter followers
    • Number of Facebook followers
    • If you have a YouTube channel
    • Writing samples
    • V-log samples
    • Klout score
  • Consider adding Audio and Video content to your blog for variety and to list higher in Google searches.
  • Consider creating Podcast for audio content on your blog. Provide commentary (your opinions on relevant topics), interviews, panel discussions, and live coverage reports.
  • Interviews may be something you want to include on you blog. If so pick your guest wisely. Do research and do pre-interview interviews to prepare yourself and your interviewee. You may want to develop a signature question, the question you ask every interviewee. During any interview remember to allow it to be about them and not about you and your opinions. Also know when it is time to end the interview and Don’t Be Boring!!! :-)
  • To improve the written quality of your blog you may consider writing posts daily to keep your readers tuned in. Topics could include a typical day for you, rants, and reviews. Consider writing shorter posts. A lot of us are checking out our favorite blogs before work or during lunch. Short and sweet could be a very good thing.
  • Improve video content on your blog by including How To videos and Travel videos. Let your follower see things through your eyes.
  • Get out from behind your laptop/pc, take a notebook and get out into the world. You may be surprised at what inspires you.
  • Put some thought into your post titles. Have them do double duty of holding existing readers and attracting new ones. Make your headlines both specific and useful.
  • Use series on your blog posts (like this one) to keep readers coming back to your blog. How to series are good. Also use series to tell a story that is too long for a single post. My bloggie fried Michael is did a great job of this on her series about having her appendix removed.
  • Develop a feature on your blog that is uniquely you. Wordless Wednesday and Thankful Thursdays are fun features by think about something unique for your blog. On Chasing Joy we do Flashback Friday!
  • Every now and then give your followers something they don’t expect. Cover something controversial or write from a different point of view. Pay attention to what your friends are talking about.
  • Get an accountability partner. Someone you trust who can tell you if your blog is getting boring, repetitive, or predictable.
  • Read your comments. Respond as much as you can. Take in negative feedback to see what you can get out of it. But also know when to ignore the negativity. You can listen to anyone for content and advice. Know when it applies to you and when it does not.
  • Try to post at the same time daily or on a regular schedule. Think about it you know when your favorite show comes on or when to buy your favorite magazine. Your readers should know when to expect to find new content on your blog.
  • A few Facebook tips:
    • Everyone who likes your page will not see your status updates. Only those who interact will see you in their timelines.
    • Become more interactive by encouraging two way conversations and posting questions of the day.
    • Post consistently.
    • Repost for those who missed your earlier status update “did you catch this this morning…”
    • Pictures and Videos encourage more engagement.
    • Monitor what other post on your Facebook page to make sure it fits your brand.
    • Use insights to see what is and is not working on your page.
    • Use Facebook for testing ideas and find out what people are talking about.
    • Use applications like hootsuite to schedule post for when you cannot be online. Facebook does not go down when you go to sleep.
  • A few twitter tips:
    • Twitter is like a stream that is constantly flowing you should repost your tweets for those who missed them when they floated by the first time.
    • Tweet Consistently.
    • Use a recent photo that is clear so that people can recognize you at events. (I changed my picture during the conference so my followers could find me).
    • In your Bio say what you are about right away. No bio no follow!
    • Balance self promotion with promotion of others with your tweets.
    • Keep your tweets shorter, under 122 characters. This allows other to more easily retweet you.
    • Remember that twitter is all about the conversation.
    • Like Facebook, Twitter is still going when you cannot be on. Use Hootsuite or a similar application to schedule your tweets in advance.
  • Keep your blog clean, polished, and pretty. Make sure you use spellchecker and that your pictures are not stretched and out of proportion.
  • Treat your blog as a business. Know your audience. Know the number 1 thing people searched for on Google that leads them to you. Know your reader’s demographics.
  • Follow brands that you are interested in working with on Facebook and Twitter. Use these platforms to help you build a relationship and to be aware of their current marketing trends.
I know that is a lot of info. Now you see why I could just go on and one about Be Blogalicous 2011!!! With all of these tips and the info from part 1, part 2, and part 3 of the HBBBS series don’t you feel like you were there with me??? Flashback Friday: Good News

Reactions:
Happy Friday!!! Are you ready for the Flashback? Bloggie friends have you picked out you post for the linky? Joy Chasers are you to find some new blogs to checkout? Flashback Friday is where we Flashback to our older posts and linkup here. We also post a link to our Flashback post on the Chasing Joy Facebook Page. Be sure to check out AT LEAST TWO other Flashback posts. Might I suggest the ones listed before and after your post. Please leave a comment saying why you selected your Flashback post and what you thought about the other Flashback posts. I'm looking forward to reading all of your Flashbacks.

I am not a news person.  I'll pay attention to the weather and little of the sports and entertainment but the rest is so depressing.  Hearing about all the crime and danger and abuse against children just fills me with anxiety instead of the Joy I am chasing.  So this week I am linking up to my post The Good News. In this post I talk about a news source I found online that focuses on Good News.  Where do you go online for upbeat or positive news stories?

Best of the Blogosphere November

Reactions:
The month of November went by in a flash. It was an OK month. A few emotional ups and downs but overall a lot to be thankful for at Thanksgiving. But this post is not about my emotional peaks and valleys or an account of my many, many, blessings. This post is about the Best of the Blogosphere!!! I want to share with you my favorite posts that I have come across this month, my favorite post that I wrote, and the post that you joy chasers had the most to say about.

So, in no particular order, here are the best posts I came across this month:

  • An Optimistic Mom dropped some knowledge in her post Things I Have Learned Blogging. I still feel very much like a novice blogger even though it has been almost two years since I started Casing Joy. I enjoyed all of her tips and I bet you will too.
  • Cirque Du Mon shared what she is thankful for and gave out some info on how to set up a life stream feed in her post Giving Thanks and Giving Back.
  • One of my favorite bloggers A Girl Named Michael answered the question that I have been wondering since I first discovered her blog in the post How to Date Your Friends Ex-Husband.  I just realized that SweetMJ actually wrote this post back in June but I discovered it in November so it still counts in my Best of the Blogosphere.
  • Last but certainly not least Nice Girl Notes had me cracking up with her stick figures in her post First World Problems Part 2.
So check out all of these or at least some of these posts and if you like them too share them, like them, tweet them, and even stumble them.

My favorite of my own posts this month is 100 Acts of Joy. It is my favorite because I learned about some holidays that I’d never heard of before and it is a challenge to myself and all of you to get into the holiday spirit by giving back.

The post that seemed to connect with joy chasers the most was Unhappy Holidays Chasing Joy with Green Eyes.  It turns out that I am not the only one and the holidays are a little difficult for many of us.

So what was your favorite post you wrote this month and what post(s) did you come across in November that you think represent the Best of the Blogosphere???

Flashback Friday: Joy in the Universe

It is a great way to rediscover our earlier work and discover some new blogs.

Be sure to check out AT LEAST TWO other Flashback posts. Might I suggest the ones listed before and after your post. Please leave a comment saying why you selected your Flashback post and what you thought about the other Flashback posts. I'm looking forward to reading all of your Flashbacks.

This week I am linking up to my post Joy in the Universe. In this post I talk about how the universe is listening and how things fall into place when you make your goals and desires known.

Don't forget to grab the I am Chasing Joy button.
