St. Patrick's Day = Chasing Joy's Day

Reactions:
I was lucky enough to have been born on the luckiest day of the year, St. Patrick's Day. When I was a kid I thought all of the festivities, green beer, and parades were all for me. I felt very special .

I have held on to that feeling of celebration and I always make a big deal out of my birthday. Not in that obnoxious, get me gifts, kind of way. But in the, Yay! I'm so happy to be blessed with another year of Chasing Joy and I want to celebrate with everyone, kind of way.

As I have gotten older a lot of my friends either don't acknowledge or play down their birthdays. (Stay tuned for my upcoming April Girlfriendology post to find out what I think about that) For a while I used to worry that maybe my friends did not like that I make a big deal out of my birthday. Maybe they found it annoying that I always want to do something fun to acknowledge the day and that I always ask people to join me.

But then I decided oh well, anyone who feels that way does not have to come. I do not ask for or expect gifts. I only ask for people to come and enjoy themselves. I am giving people an excuse to go out and have fun. Why should I be worried that people will not appreciate me asking them to have fun???? I shouldn't.

So this year like all the other years, I invited a bunch of friends to go out for my birthday. To my present surprise the majority of people were able to attend. We headed out to a restaurant bar and had a great time. There were about 15 of us not to mention everyone else in the place getting there Green on for St. Patrick's day. We ate, drank, and were Merry.

I am really happy with how my birthday turned out. I didn't even cry (see It's my Birthday And I Can Cry if I Want to). I really appreciate all of your birthday shout outs on that blog post, on Facebook and on Twitter. Also Big Thanks to all who came out to celebrate with me.

Here are some of the pictures from that night.

Blogging or More like Vloging About It

Reactions:
I did not chicken out.  I went and now I am Blogging About it.  On Friday I attended The event Blog about It hosted by Simply Z at the new Philadelphia venue, Venue 4605.  As I mentioned in my post Chasing Joy in Person I was pretty nervous about the event.  This was my 1st time having been invited to attend an event representing my blog.  I almost chickened out of going.  But, earlier in the week I read a devotional about doing things you believe God wants you to do even if you are scared and not worrying because He'll take care of everything.  So I took that to mean I should not chicken out.  Take a look at the Vlog I did before leaving for the event.

As I mentioned in the Vlog this was my 1st time doing a Vlog with my new camera. Obviously I still have a lot to learn about lighting.  I apologize for the glow effect on my face. LOL.  I did this Vlog while I was waiting for my cousin to pick me up.  She has been Chasing Joy with me from my 1st blog post and it was really cool of her to join me at the event.  It did help my nervousness having her there.

Overall I'd say the event went great!.  Venue 4605 is very new and somewhat of a blank canvas.  Simply Z will be able to take it in whatever direction she chooses. I believe Blog About It was the 1st event to take place there.  Many local Philly bloggers came.  I got to talk to most of them.  As a matter of fact here are a few of them:

Sorry about the sound quality.  If you could not hear these are the lovely ladies from Positively Shining, Lizzi-Kay, Same Story Different Face, and Who Is Urban Buttafly.  Check out there blogs, I will be.  Other bloggers at the event included Simply Z, A Styld Life, The After 5 Lifestyle, Young Hip and Chic, and Huey Does Art.  I will be visiting all of these blogs as often as I can.  Us Philly Bloggers have to stick together right???

I am really really happy I attended the event.  I am proud of myself for not chickening out.  I appreciate all of the advice you gave me in the comments of the Chasing Joy In Person Post.  Here are a few photos from the nigtht and the Vlog I did after the event.

My experience has been whenever I have been afraid to attend an event, and gone anyway, I have come back really really happy that I went.  Have you had that experience, or a contradictory experience?  Tell me about it.

Happy Friday!!!  This weeks Flashback, 6 Month's Later, is a post I wrote 6 month's after I started blogging.  Blogging milestones provide me with a lot of opportunities to reflect on personal growth.  What kinds of milestones do you use as times of reflection (blogaversaries, birthdays, quarterly, etc)???

Chasing Joy In Person!

Reactions:
I try to be very honest hear on Chasing Joy.   I make an effort to say what I truly feel and fight my urges to sugar coat things or to be overly concerned with other people’s feelings.  I say all of this to emphasize that other than being a little more open, because I am writing as opposed to speaking,  I am the same online and in person.  As I have become more and more comfortable with blogging more people who know me personally also read my blog.  None of them are ever surprised at what they find on Chasing Joy.  Ok pleasantly surprised that they like it maybe, but no jaw dropping shock at anything they read here.  My online persona is the same as who you see in person.

But If you don’t believe me feel free to find out for yourself.  Or if you do  believe me but are curious about, how tall I am, how I dress, or how I style my hair, here is your chance to see for yourself.  I have been invited to  Blog About It! And guess what, you are invited too.  Blog About It, is a networking event for bloggers & their followers.  I am honored to have been invited to represent Chasing Joy.  As Joy Chasers all of you are invited as well.  If you will be in the Philadelphia area on Friday March 23rd, 2012 please join me at Venue, 4605 (4605 N. 6th Street, 19140)  at 8:00pm.  Admission is $10.  There will be a DJ, some refreshments, and giveaways!  It should be a Joyful time.

Now while I am thrilled at the thought of hanging out with you Joy Chasers in person.  I am a bit nervous.  This is the first time I am being asked to represent my blog in person.  Now Chasing Joy is my blog and my brand and as I said above it is Me.  So I know I am representing it all the time.  But somehow this feels different.  I know I’d feel much more relaxed with some of you by my side :-)

What advice can you give me for representing my blog at an event for the first time?  If you blog or have a small business or something similar  what was it like when you first represented your brand in person to the public?  And Who will be joining me at Blog About it???

It's My Birthday & I'll Cry If I Want To

Reactions:
It’s my birthday and I’ll cry if I want to!!! OK it’s not quite my birthday (5 days away) and I’m not really going to cry. I actually really really like my birthday. I like Birthdays in general. It is the one day a year that is just about you. Or in this case me!!! It is a day to be celebrated. What a blessing it is to share another year of life with all of your friends, family, and loved ones.

So, why is the thought of crying even crossing my mind? Because I have a problem. No, it’s not what you think either. I will be 32 but fear of aging is not my problem. I can look at the women in my family and see that time will be kind to me and leave me easy on the eye. So I am not afraid of my looks fading or not being considered attractive by the opposite sex.

My problem is this: EXPECTATIONS!!!! I’ve always had them and they have always been high. At 22 I was plugging my salary into online calculators to see how much of each pay I’d need to save to be a millionaire by 30. Something must have been wrong with math cause I am a thousandair at best.

As the tag line of this blog says I’m all grown up and things are not quite how I imagined. My life has not matched my expectations. My life is not bad at all. It is just very very different from what I expected. Like most people birthdays prove to be a reflective time and my reflections always turn to the difference between what my life is and what I thought it would be, should be.

It’s amazing how if you are not careful the negative thoughts just jump right in. Will my life ever measure up to my expectations? Are my expectations unrealistic? Am I living in some type of fantasy world? And then I remember, I Am Chasing Joy!!! I can’t be my own Joy Thief! I may not be able to control every single thought that pops into my head but I can control how long I’ll entertain such non-sense. And the answer is not a second longer.

I learned a lesson when I was about 19 that I had forgotten until now. The reason I hated high school but loved college has to do with EXPECTATIONS. I went into high-school after watching my brother’s experience and a little too much TV. High School was nothing like Saved By the Bell and I was disappointed. College on the other hand, I entered with no idea what to expect. Other than feeling confident I could do the work I had zero expectations. Every day was a kind of adventure. Some things were not so good but most things were (kind of like my life now). But the lack of expectations paved the way for a lack of disappointment, also known as being content.

So, it’s my Birthday and I Can Cry if I want to, but I won’t! Instead I will make a mantra out of the Serenity Prayer, Let go of my preconceived expectations of how my life is supposed to be, and Chase Joy by celebrating my birthday in style with a spa day, dinner, drinks, and birthday cake with friends.

Do you think accepting that life will not be how you though a natural part of becoming an adult? Have any of you struggled with life not living up to your expectations? How have you let go of your expectations while holding firm to Joy?

Weekend Guest: Chasing Joy and Kids

Reactions:
Joy Chasers, we are so lucky!  We have a Weekend Guest. This weekend I am happy to welcome SweetMJ. SweetMJ is the author of the blog A Girl Named Michael. A Girl Named Michael is where you go to read about the strange thoughts and adventures of a loud mouth small town girl full of contradictions. I  have never read one of her posts without laughing.   I absolutely love her blog and am honored to have her as our Weekend Guest. Here is her post: Chasing Joy and Kids

First off I am so excited to be sharing over at Chasing Joy. I am a huge fan of this blog and the message it gives. Finding Joy.

My name is Michael and I blog about my mad cap adventures over at A Girl Named Michael. Mostly I just go on and on about nothing (I may be the Seinfeld of the blogging world).

When I started writing this post months and months ago I had an idea but could never get it to work "on paper". Until recently when I made a pledge to embrace my current season of life. To me that means Chasing Joy in the place I am at right now. Which is often easier said than done.

About 8 months ago I made the fateful decision to move in with The BF, this meant that for at least half the week I would be living with his 2 kids (13 year old boy and 6 year old girl). I didn't think this would be that big of a deal, after all I had lived with my sister and her 2 kids and that worked out pretty good for everyone.

Some how in my deluded mind single with no kids mind I thought playing "pseudo" step-mom was not that big of a deal. I figured it would be the same as playing aunt. So boy was I shocked when it was vastly different.

Lets be honest being a stepparent is hard and being dads live in girlfriend is even worse (despite having a very good relationship with The BFs exwife). And I started to resent a few things and I found myself "hiding" in our bedroom a lot.

Then one day while driving around with the 6 year old girl we had this conversation:
•6 year old: MJ why do you have Tashi (my 8 year old rottweiler).
•Me: Because I dont have kids and Tashi is like my kid.
•6 year old: OOOHHH (then she is quite for a minute) MJ?
   •Me: What?
•6 year old: But your kind of like my mom right?
•Me: Yes I guess I kind of am.
•6 year old: So that kind of makes me your kid right?
   •Me: Yes it does.

I know a lot of people won't agree but the 6 year old is correct I do play the mom role a lot. Lots of mothering and cleaning up and cooking and doing hair...and loving.

Its not always fun and its not always perfect but now instead of being resentful I am Chasing Joy and Kids.

Since I was tagged by three different Joy Chasers (Bits of Bee, Embrace the Struggle and Cookie's Chronicles) I have 33 questions to answer.  Here Goes:

Bits of Bee's Questions
1. Share a funny quote (and link it up for Quotable Bits on Tuesday) - "Behind every great woman is a guy looking at her ass." ~Author Unknown

2. What is your favourite thing to eat? - My mom's fried chicken, baked macaroni and sweet potato pie.

3. Share a favourite photo you've taken recently, and tell us why it's your fav! - This is me about to go snow tubing (pushing out of my comfort zone/ being brave)

4. What is something you like to do just for you? - Go to the Spa

5. Which suits your personality more: dresses and heels or stretch pants and sneakers? Why? - Can I say both.  Dresses and heels fit my personality but not my comfort zone.  All heels really hurt my feet.

6. What would be your dream job? - To Blog full time and write books

7. What is your favourite thing about blogging? - Connecting with people. Being able to say things in writing that I would not have the courage to say out loud.  Making new friends both virtual and in real life.

8. We all need a little self esteem boost every once in awhile - what do you think is your most beautiful physical feature and why? -  My face :-)

9. How did you meet your husband/partner/best friend? - I am still waiting to meet my husband :-)  I have a lot of great friends.  I have meet most of them through school elementary and college.

10. Which of these are you most addicted to, and why? Pinterest, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram - Facebook!  I like catching a glimps into my friends lives via there status and pictures.  I also like how I have reconnected with people I have lost touch with.

11. Link us to a favourite post you've written. Why is it your fav? - Ready for My Tutu is my favorite post that I have written.  I took ballet as an overweight adult.  I was really nervous and feel that I was very very brave to take it on.  Overall it was a good experience for me.

Embrace the Struggle's Questions:

1. What's your #1 pet peeve? - People who will through you under the bus

2.What facial feature do you find most attractive on the opposite sex? - Smile

7.What skill do you still want to master? - Seduction lol

8.If you had unlimited money and time and didn't have to work, what would you do daily? - Sleep, shop, socialize, write, take classes in art, cooking or baking, volunteer, work in a flour or candy shop or somewhere fun.

9.Who is your favorite cartoon character? - Chetara from Thunder Cats

10.Are you an introvert or an extrovert? - Introvert

11.Which social cause interests you the most? - Diabetes and Cancer Research

Cookie's Chronicles' Questions:

1. How many times have you been tagged to answer 11 questions? - 3

2. If you were stranded on a desert island, what three things (yes, just three - no cheats!) would you want to have with you? - A bible, a cell phone, and food.

3. Would you rather take a relaxing bath or go shopping on Black Friday? - Black Friday Shopping

4. What is one thing you hope some day to do or achieve? - Become a wife and mother.  Why is it so important to you?  I have always imagined myself in that roll and I think I'd be good at both.

5. What is your favourite way to waste time? - Watching TV or Surfing the Internet

6. Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp? Who's your favourite leading man, and why? - Brad Pitt.  I think there is something wrong with Johnny Depp.  My favorite leading man would be Denzel Washington.  He plays good guy and bad boy equally well and definitely pulls of sexy when the role requires it.

7. The book or the movie? If you know a great book is coming out as a movie, will you wait for the movie or rush through the book before it comes out? - I try to finish the book before the movie.  I am doing that now with The Hunger Games.

8. If you could hire someone to take care of something for you - anything at all (money is no object) - what would it be? - All of my cleaning.

9. What was your favourite subject in school, and why? - I don't think I really had a favorite subject but I'll go with math because it was consistent.  2+2 is always 4.

10. Back, side or front? What's your favourite position? SLEEPING people. I'm talking about sleeping. Sheesh. Minds... gutter... out! ;) - I pretty much hit them all during the course of the night.

11. Link us to a favourite post you've written. Why is it your fav? (I'm stealing this question from Bianca's list. Couldn't resist!) - See number 11 from Bits of Bee's questions.
