#FlashbackFriday: 2010 A Year in Review

Reactions:
Happy Friday everyone!  I hope you had a good week possibly filled with lots of Thanksgiving left overs, shinny new things purchased on Black Friday, or confirmation and tracking codes as bi-products of Cyber Monday. My week was good  but my weekend should be even better especially on Sunday when we have the #ChasingJoy twitter chat.  This Month's Chat comes complete with a giveaway from our sponsor Creekside Naturals.  Join in using hashtag #ChasingJoy we will be talking about the holidays.  Be sure to like our Sponsor's Facebook page and follow @LCCindee of Creekside Naturals on twitter. The Chat starts at 4pm EST and last about an hour.  I hope to "see" many of you there.

Before we get to the Flashback let me share my favorite post of those linked up last week.  Here are my top three. I know there are a few expecting Joy Chasers.  Checkout How to survive the festive season whilst pregnant.  For those of you who always lose track of time while Facebooking, you are not alone.  Checkout Could you use a Facebook Timer?.  If think you don't have the right outfit for your next outing check out

My Flashback this week,  2010 A Year in Review is exactly that.  It was my reflection on all that I accomplished in 2010.  It seems like that was a pretty good year for me.   We are approaching the end of 2012 have you reflected back on all that you've accomplished yet?

If you don't know what the Flashback is all about let me enlighten you.  Flashback Friday is a great way to re-discover our earlier works and discover some new blogs. Any Questions: How do I get more FB "likes"?

Reactions:
Recently I had a major blogger success moment.  The Chasing Joy community on Facebook has been consistently growing.  About two weeks ago the Facebook Likes crossed the 500 people milestone.  Yay!! It is so exciting!  500 hundred different people are interested in my content.

Of course I shared post of gratitude on both the Chasing Joy and my personal Facebook page.  After seeing my post and congratulating me a friend asked, "how'd you do that?"  I did not have any top secret tips for him.  But I did tell him how I manage the page and what I feel has helped the "likes" grow.  Then I realize that this is a great question for the Any Questions Series.

Question: How did I get over 500 likes on the Chasing Joy Facebook Page.

Answer:  It did not happen overnight.  The Facebook Page is almost 3 years old.  Since I started the page I have focused on engagement.  The more comments, likes, and shares on Facebook the more visible your page is to others, including those who have not liked your page, via stories.  Stories is what Facebook calls it when you see the activities of your friends in your timeline. For example so-and-so liked Chasing Joy's status.

I focus on engagement by asking questions and encouraging Joy Chasers to post directly on the Chasing Joy wall.  I have reoccurring themes throughout the week, Make it Happen Monday, Way to Go Wednesday, Thankful Thursday, and Flashback Friday. This helps Joy Chasers know what and when to share their goals, shout outs, gratitude, and favorite blog posts on the Chasing Joy FB page.  To encourage more engagement and conversation I try to reply to every comment on the Facebook Page.  I am certain I miss some but not many.  (For the record I'm trying to get as good as responding directly on the blog as I am at responding on Facebook)

Post pictures often. Pictures get a really good response on Facebook.  They are much more shareable.  Also, I am sure to share any other peoples pictures that will be well received by you Joy Chasers.

Quoting my dad "Consistency is the Key".  I post on the Facebook page regularly.  I post inspirational quotes, questions, and many random thoughts.  There is rarely a day that goes by that Facebook does not hear from me.  Now I don't actually log on every day.  I schedule posts ahead of time.  I like to use the app Hootsuite.  It allows you to schedule posts  (or tweets) weeks and even months in advance.  I make sure to schedule posts to go out when I am asleep.  When I am asleep there is another half of the world that is awake and online.

The most important thing to do to grow your Facebook likes is to develop a relationship with the people who like you.  This does not mean you have to learn everything about them.  But as you engage with them and respond to their messages you will get to know them and that will give you insight as to what types of things they want to see from you.  Also take the time to visit their FB pages if they have them.  Engage with them on their pages. A little reciprocity goes a long way.  This especially comes in handy when you are approaching a milestone or want to spread the word about a special event.  You can say "hay people who love me on Facebook please share this.." or "please invite your friends to like my page."  Just be sure to return the favor.

Having a support system  has really helped increase Chasing Joy's visibility.  A great support system will include people who are trying to accomplish the same or similar goals who decide to work together instead of competing.  I get this type of support form the Shades of Social Media. The Shades is a group of female bloggers of color who work together to share our diverse voices on line.  We work together promoting and encouraging each other in many areas including Facebook.  Look for a group with similar interests and goal as your own.  If you cannot find one then start your own.

Other things I do to increase my Facebook likes are:
  • Make sure I  mention and link to the Chasing Joy Facebook page in many of my blog posts
  • Encourage my twitter peeps to like Chasing Joy on Facebook
  • On my personal Facebook page I list my occupation as owner of Chasing Joy and I make sure it is a live link to the Chasing Joy Facebook Page.
  • Check the Facebook insights to find ou the age range and locations of those who have liked your page.
If you like these tips then please be sure to Like the Chaisng Joy page :-)

Did I leave anything out? What are your tips for increasing your likes on FB?

Mental Health Monday: My Confession

Reactions:
Today I am going to make a little confession.  I say a little confession because my friends and most of my families are already privy to this bit of info.  It's nothing juicy or all that uncommon.  It's actually a rather ordinary fact but still a rather personal one.

So are you ready?  Drum roll please.........  Here goes, I see a therapist. I routinely see a shrink and get my head shrunk. LOL  That's right several times a month I go to a doctor and discuss my problems, anxieties, hopes, and dreams both my dreams for the future and the ones I had about the lions, haunted porch, and aliens.  She helps me see things from a different point of view and helps me find better ways to deal with day to day to day stressors.

So why am I letting this cat out of the bag today?  Well it had been on my mind for a while now to reveal this bit of info about myself.  I know there is still quite a bit of stigma within the black community about therapy and mental health .  It was only a matter of time before I was ready to speak positively about the virtues of therapy on this blog.  I also figured I'd do it on a Monday.  Many bloggers including one of my favorite's Bewildered Bug participate in Mental Health Mondays.  While I don't intend to pick that up as a regular feature on the blog it does provide good timing for my announcement.

But why this Monday?  Well, last week I received a very unexpected phone call.  I answered a call on my cell phone from a caller who's number I did not recognize.  Within a few minutes the caller revealed themselves as an old friend and got to the point of their call.  The person started out saying they had been reading my blog.  My first thought was oh crap they read something that they did not like.  But I was wrong.  The person revealed that they found it so uplifting and wished they could be as happy as me.  They went on to say that they were in a really bad place and where basically contemplating suicide!!!

I spoke to the person for about a half hour.  During that time I reminded the person that I see a therapists and that has helped me.  I emphasized over and over again that the caller should seek out therapy of some sort for themselves.  I advised them to go to a hospital, or a church.  I reminded the person of the people that would be hurt if they went through with a suicide.  But over and over again I stressed how the therapy has helped me and that I felt it could be helpful for them as well. I hope what I said sunk in.  After the call I also texted the person the National Suicide Prevention Hotline phone number.  I hope what I said was helpful.

So here I am doing my very own Mental Health Monday Post and confessing to you all about my therapy.  God is good and this blog with it's joyful quotes has been a tremendous help in my overall mental/emotional health.  But complimenting that is the therapy.  Now I do not have any sort of Mental Disorder or chemical imbalance.  I started therapy after the death of my dad and during a really bad break up.  At times life can be really hard and that was a hard time for me.  I was feeling very very down, maybe even depressed.  Now it is normal to feel down and sometimes depressed but I did not want to get stuck there.  I was concerned for myself because my thoughts were dark and I felt that I was struggling to get through my days.  Therapy helped me with that.  I continue to go because I like to have a safe place to express myself without fearing that I am worrying someone else.

So that is my confession.  Are you disappointed?  Where you expecting something more juicy???  LOL  Sorry to disappoint you if you were.

I do hope that if there is someone out there who thinks they may need to talk to a therapist but are embarrassed that they will see that it is no big deal and go.  If any of you are feeling depressed or down for longer than usual or feel stuck there please go.  If any of you are considering hurting yourself in any way please go.  Remember that I go so you will not at all be alone.

If you have health insurance you can look on the back of your medical card and there will be a phone number for mental health or behavioral health.  Use that number to find a therapist within your network.  If you don't have insurance go to your local hospital and explain that you need to talk to a therapist. Many churches offer counseling services as well, often by certified therapist who volunteer their time at the church.  If you are contemplating hurting yourself call the Suicide Prevention Hotline Immediately  1-800-273-TALK (8255).

Now remember that  my advice here is based only on my personal experience.  I am not a doctor, therapist, or counselor.  I am just a blogger who is Chasing Joy, who spills her guts to a therapist regularly, and who does not think there is anything wrong with that.

What are your thoughts?  Do you feel there is a stigma within your community about seeking therapy or any kind of emotional or mental health support?

Flashback Friday: Christmas Eve

Reactions:
Happy Flashback Friday, Black Friday, and Belated Thanksgiving Joy Chasers.  I hope you had a great Thanksgiving.  Especially those of us who have a hard time with the holidays.  As I write this post it is Thanksgiving Day.  I am writing while waiting for my last side dish (stuffin muffins) to finish so that me and my mom can eat.  After dinner we are going to head out to Target to scope out the Black Friday scene.  Neither of us need anything but since it is the two of us it will be fun :-)

As I reflect on all that I am thankful for this year, this blog and the Chasing Joy community of Joy Chasers on Facebook and Twitter stands out amongst the things I am most thankful for.  This blog has been God's blessing to me and a lifeline that pulled me out of so much grief and sorrow.  I am constantly encouraged and inspired by your comments, facebook posts, tweets, and emails.  I am Thankful for each and everyone of you.

I am also thankful for Flashback Fridays which let us look back on past posts.  If you are new here is the deal.   Flashback Friday is a great way to re-discover our earlier works and discover some new blogs. Having Chicken For A More Joyful Turkey Day

Reactions:
Tomorrow is Turkey Day!  The holidays are definitely upon us.  It is a happy and Joyful time of year.  At least it is supposed to be.  But for many people including me it is a tough time.  The holidays have so many wonderful attributes including a spirit of giving and togetherness which is good.  However it often comes with expectations and a desire for things to be a certain way.  With the realization that things cannot be the way we want or the way we expected comes a sense of disappointment.  Some of you Joy Chasers are going through your first holiday season after the loss of a loved one and that is really hard.

So, Repeat after me: the holiday season is not always happy. Sometimes it is hard.  Great now that we've been honest about that let's not fall into a pity party.  I was talking to a co-worker recently about my own reservations about the holidays and what I would have like to have happen vs. what was really going to happen.  She was going through the same thing.  My advice to her and now my challenge to all of you and to myself is to go into Thanksgiving, and the rest of the holidays with one goal.  To figure out what you can do to have the best day possible.  Then do that.  Don't compare it to what you really wanted to have happen or even to what happened last year or the year before that.  Simply say for me to have an OK day I need to do this.

For me that means on Turkey Day I will sleep late, text all my friends Happy Turkey Day, I will cook and enjoy the unhealthy holiday food that I don't have regularly and I will enjoy it without feeling guilty.  I will enjoy spending time with my mom and feeding my dog table scraps.  I will cook a chicken because I really don't love turkey.  I will have ice cream with my sweet potato pie because It will remind me of how my dad liked to do that.  I will go to Target and see how many people are waiting in line the doors to open for Black Friday, and if it does not look to crazy I will likely join them.  These are the things that will help me bring some Joy back to my Turkey Day.

It won't be my ideal day and I will be missing my dad, but the day does not have to suck or be horrible.

What are your plans for Turkey Day?  If your day will be less than ideal what do you need to do to have it be an OK day?

The Little Things

Reactions:
I have struggled with my weight since I was about 12 years old.  That was the first time I remember feeling embarrassed about it and trying to lose weight.  Over the last 20 years I have tried many things weight watchers, nutrisystem, metabolife, protein shakes, slim fast, you get the drift.  I even listed fit into a single digit dress size in my original Devil's Workshop list from the early days of this blog.

I know that as my doctor said it is pretty simple to lose weight but not at all easy.  Simple in that to lose weight you have to burn more calories than you consume.  Meaning the combination of eating less and exercise has to result in a calorie deficit.   Yet for some reason that simple formula has been so hard for me.  It involves a whole slew of behavior changes and learning to respond to my emotions differently.  I explored some of those changes when I tried hypnosis for weight loss.  In that series I did tap into some techniques to help with my way of thinking.

All of it can be quite overwhelming at times.  From past experience I know that feeling overwhelmed can be a big trigger for overeating.  So to combat that feeling of being overwhelmed I am making an effort to remind myself that life is just a combination of little choices that when added together produce out comes.  It is the little things that add or subtract from our wast lines.  So here are some facts about the little choices I can make and how they impact my weight loss.

For the last few months I have  been walking for half of my lunch on average of 3 days a week. I burn about 125 calories on each walk.  That works out to about 375 calories burned a week, 19,500 burned a year, and approximately 5.6lbs lost or kept off each year.

I typically make it to Zumba class every other Friday.  I burn about 450 calories each class.  That woks out to 900 calories burned a month, 10,800 calories burned a year, and approximately 3.1lbs lost or kept off each year.

I am in no way a gym rat but I do go every now and then.  If I get there once a week (in addition to zumba class) and do the elliptical for 30 minutes I can burn about 250 calories in 30 min.  That would work out to about 13,000 calories burned a year, and approximately 3.7lbs lost or kept off each year.

On the weekends like a lot of us I will often throw healthy eating to the side and opt for fast food.  Fast food meals can easily be 1000 calories or more.  Even if I only had one of these meas a weak  would work out to gaining or holding on to 15lbs a year.  Imagine if I ate it more than once a week :-(  If I could decrease this to only once  a month that would be a much more reasonable maintaining or gain of only 3.4lb a year.

I have a habit of wanting something sweet every day.  Over the years I have managed to switch from having snack cakes that often have close to 500 calories each to those between 200 and 320 calories each.  However,  this adds up to between 1400 and 2240 calories a week and 70,000 to 116,480 calories a year.  This works out to gaining or holding on to 20 to 33lbs every year.

These are all small choices that I make regularly.  When I look at them individually I can see how they add up to me gaining losing or maintaining my weight.  I can see where it would be the most beneficial for me to make changes.  I can see what behaviors are best to continue with.

I calculated my calories burned and consumed using the app lose it from my cell phone.  I also used the scale of 3500 calories equalling one pound for my calculations.  I like math and seeing things in numbers helps me to understand how all of these little things add up.

Do you ever think about how all of the little decisions you make add up?  What small things do you need to change or maintain to get the outcomes you want?  What little things are interferring with your joy?

Flashback Friday: Be The Coffee

Reactions:
Happy Friday!!  We are days away from Turkey day!  Have you completed your grocery shopping.  I have NOT.  So you know what I will be doing sometime this weekend. :-)

Before we get to the flashback I want to remind you that this Saturday Nov. 17th is National Unfriend Day on FB.  Now unfriending may sound mean.  But I am giving you permission (not that you need it but sometimes getting an ok from someone else feels better ) to unfriend anyone who's facebook presence is stealing Joy from your time online.  Now I just hope you don't unfriend me.  LOL
Now, on to the Flashback. My post this week, Be The Coffee, is one of my faves!  I'm asking how do you handle adversity and advising you to Be The Coffee.

Are you ready to Flashback? Here is the deal. Flashback Friday is a great way to re-discover our earlier works and discover some new blogs. Kegels: The Down Low on Exercising Down There

Reactions:
Today I'm talking about vaginas!  Well sort of.  Yesterday, I was visiting some of my fellow Shades of Social Media's blogs.  Karla Trotman's guest blogger, Elizabeth Carrollton's post Help! My Vagina Has Fallen Out of My Body has left me with vaginas on the brain.  LOL  Her post is on Pelvic Organ Prolapse or POP prevention and ways to treat it non-invasively.  It is a good read so be sure to check it out.

Elizabeth's post includes Kegel exercises as a way to prevent POP.  My comment on the post was: Chasing Joy says: November 13, 2012 at 12:35 pm
"Kegels! I wish there was more talk about Kegels to younger girls. It’s like its a secret that you can exercise “down there” SMH. There are so many health benefits to it."

So I figured why don't I talk about it and tell the secret.  So here is the down low on exercising down there.

What are Kegel exercises?
Kegel exercises aka pelvic floor exercises are exercises that strengthen the muscles that control urine flow.

Why should I do Kegels?
As Elizabeth mentioned Kegels can prevent and help with the treatment of POP. Kegels help with urinary incontenince (leaky bladder) in both men and women. Yes men can do them too!  Kegels also help men with urge incontenince which is a need pee that is so strong he can't make it in time :-(  During pregnancy Kegels help strengthen the pelvic floor which can become stretched leading to years of bladder control problems.  I have also heard that Kegel exercises can improve the quality of a womans experience during sex.  I will not speak on that personaly though.  Not qute that kind of blog :-)

How do I do Kegel exercises?
The way I learned to do them was while using the bathroom.  When you pee use your muscles to stop mid stream.  That is a Kegel.  Repeat the tightening of those muscels and you are doing kegels.  After you are fimilar with the exercises you can do them anywhere. No one will be able to tell.  Squeeze for a few seconds release for a few seconds. You have to do them for a copule minutes every day for them to be beneficial.

I'm not a gyno or doctor.  This info is based on my personal knowledge and what I found on WebMD Women's Health

So don't let a droppy vagina or week bladder steal your Joy.  Do your kegels!
Are you familar with Kegels? Have you found them helpful?  Are you doing them right now??? LOL

#ChasingJoy Chat Recap: Self-Esteem & Self-Confidence

Reactions:
Last weekend we had the #ChasingJoy Twitter chat.  It was great as usual. The topic was self-estem and self-confidence.  This topic was very relevant for me.  While overall I think my self-estem is healthy it could use a boost at times.  Confidence is one of those things that increases and decreases depending on the stuation.  Below are a few of my favoite tweets from the chat.

If you missed the chat I'll give you a chance to answer question #Q9. Is there 1 thing that you want/ need to work on to give yourself a self-esteem /confidence boost?

Joy of Giving a Huge Success!!!

Reactions:
It's been a little over a week and I am still riding high.  My first ever event, The Joy of Giving, Chasing Joy Event, was a huge success. Over 15 people came out to the event.  The event was free but cost of admission was one article of clothing, shoes, accessories, or handbags for the clothing drive donation for the charity. Well everyone brought more than just one item.  The fitting room we used to hold the donations during the event was packed.  At the end of the night we packed the donations up in the charity spokesperson's car. We had collected way more than any of us had imagined.  The donations filled her entire trunk as well as the back seat of her car up to the windows.  She barely had room in car for her mother and daughter to ride home.

I was so nervous before the event. I ended up running a little late to get to the venue, Bellanor Boutique. I wanted to come across as professional to everyone.  I was worried that the Breaking Chains Spokeperson or the Pastry Divas ( who provided our yummy cake shots) would get there before me. I wanted everything to go well for the attendees.  I wanted the sponsors to be acknowledged and appreciated.  I felt so panicked because I was running late. I drove as quickly as possible without causing an accident.  Well my panic was for naught.

Everything went so smoothly.  I arrived at the venue before everyone except for the boutique owner.  I had plenty of time to set up.  The Pasty Divas and the charity spokeswomen got there in good time.  Guest started to arrive and by twenty after six I was saying my welcome and getting us started with some games and giveaways.

Everyone had a blast and went home with smiles and gifts from our sponsors.  Some even went home with two and three gifts.  I had a good time too.  The atmosphere was so positive.  Old and new friends came out to support me.  New connections were made by me and between the guests.

I could not have done it without the generosity of all of our sponsors.  I encourage you to connect with all of them because they believe in giving back and connecting with our community by supporting events like the Joy of Giving event.

Flashback Friday: The Joy of Hurt, Continued...

Reactions:
Sandy! Such a nice name for such a terrible storm. I am feeling really blessed this Flashback Friday. Sandy passed by me without causing any trouble. A few blocks from my house, somebody's car was completely totaled when a huge tree branch fell on it. The TV footage of NJ and NY is horrible. My prayers go out to those people who have lost so much.

Speaking of prayers, today's Flashback Friday post, The Joy of Hurt, Continued, is about my prayers being answered and my dog making it through his tumor removal surgery.  God has been answering my prayers for my pets continuously.  They are all doing well almost two years later.  Check out the post about my Hurty and leave some comments about how your pets bring you joy.

If this is your first Flashback here is the deal. Flashback Friday is a great way to re-discover our earlier works and discover some new blogs.
