Most Joyful Things Blogaversary Giveaway

Guess what happened three years ago today?   Three years ago I decided that I needed to find my way back to being my normal self.  Three years ago I decided I would not let grief and loneliness drown me.  Three years ago today I started Chasing Joy!!!!   It's my blogaversary!!!!!

In celebration I want to talk about all things Joyful.  Now I know money cannot by happiness and the greatest Joy's in life usually surround relationships, accomplishments, and experiences.  But there are a few things that definitely put a smile on my face. I'm going to tell you about them and here is the best part, you can get some of them for yourself as part of this awesome blogaversary giveaway.  This is the biggest giveaway to come across Chasing Joy, with 12 prizes, that's right 12, and multiple ways to increase your entries after leaving a blog post.

In no particular order because all of these things are equally AWESOME! Here are my most Joyful Things!!!
  • Motions Hair Care Products!  I grew up seeing that familiar gold and purple packaged products in the hair stores in my neighborhood.  They have products for both relaxed and natural hair styles.  My favorite product is the Motions Hold & Shine spray.  I use it most often during that week right before I get my relaxer touch up.  It keeps my hair from being too unruly, holding it in place without making it feel hard while giving a nice sheen.  Now another reason Motions Hair Care made my most Joyful Things list is because they believe in giving back to the same community that buys their products.  They were one of the first and biggest sponsors of the Joy of Giving Charity Event.
  • Potatoes! I know it's a little weird but I love these things.  I actually think I'm addicted to them.  I have been picking them over rice and pasta when having carbs.  They are Green Giant whole red skinned baby potatoes in a rosemary butter sauce that steam in the bag in the microwave.  No cleaning, peeling, or chopping potatoes.  They are yummy and easy and definitely one of my most Joyful things.
  • Cake!  But not just any cake, cake from Bredenbeck's Bakery!  Bredenbeck's Bakery is my favorite bakery.  Their cakes are yummy and they can design them to fit your theme.  I loved my last birthday cake from there.  Check out the St. Patrick's day theme.  Bredenbeck's also believes in giving back and supporting charity events happening in and around Philly.
  • Creekside Naturals:  Creekside Naturals brings me Joy because the owner and I started our friendship on twitter via blogging.  She's started her business making natural soaps, saves and other assorted Natural products.  I love seeing her work in process pictures on Facebook and I appreciate Creekside's support in all of my Chasing Joy ventures.  She donated awesome gift basket for the Joy of Giving Event.  Spoiler alert, you might win your own from the giveaway.
  • Shades of Social Media!  OK this is not really a thing its a group.  It is a group of people of color who leverage social media for personal, business, civic and social purposes.  I have found tremendous support, knowledge, and encouragement from this group.  As a matter of fact one of the Shades, Sadiah aka @ProverbsWife even jumped at the chance to help me celebrate my 3rd Blogaversary by donating two copies of her ebook How to Get Organized in 24 Hours (oops that was another spolier). If you dont want to wait for the giveaway to end you can download her book NOW for only  $12.99 just Click here to visit Saidah @ No worries, if you win How to Get Organized in 24 Hours in the giveaway your !$12.99 will be refunded :-)
  • Emeralistic Treasures! Emeralistics brings me Joy because I love the Gem who creates all the Treasures.  She is absolutely one of my best friends and a friend for life.  I have know her since 4th grade, dare I say over 20 years.  It brings me great joy watching her turn her passion for turning precious gems and her love of crafts to a successful business.
  • School Rings!  Well my school ring.  Every time I look at it I feel so proud of myself.  Attending and completing college is  not something to take for granted!  Many people are not fortunate to attend or are unable to finish for a variety of reasons.  It is such a blessing and an accomplishment.  I feel good whenever I look at it.
  • Epiphany Mobile Spa!  She is the spa that comes to you.  This is a great idea to get spa services in the comfort of your own home.  I also really love that she offers special spa services for cancer patients. One of my favorite products from Epiphany was her scented shea butters.  The fragrances are not too overpowering ant he shea butter has helped my skin not be too dry through this winter.
These are a few of my most Joyful Things!

Now, time for the fun!! The good part is it's my blogaversary but you are getting gifts!  This is my biggest and best giveaway yet.  Here are the prizes.  5 of you will win my favorite hair spray, Motions Hold & Shine spray.  One of you Philly locals will win a $10 Gift Certificate to Bredenbeck's Bakery.  Creekside Naturals is offering up prizes for two lucky readers, a gift basket of natural items and soap for a year (a different variety of natural soap delivered each month).  2 of you will learn How to Get Organized in 24 hours courtesy of A Proverbs Wife.  Remember you can order your copy of the ebook right now if you don't want to wait for the giveaway to end just Click here to visit Saidah @  Emreralistic Treasures is offering a free hand made item from her collection.  Last but certainly not least Epiphany Mobile Spa is offering a gift basket of her spa products.  That's a total of 12 different prizes that can be one.

10 Joyful Memories of my Grandmother

I like to keep fun things on my desk at work.  I have pictures of my pets, nieces, nephews, and friends babies.  I have mugs, paper weights, and a mouse pad representing my Alma mater, Temple University.  I have magnets, calenders, and other souvenirs from my and my co-workers vacations.  I have all of these things on my desk mixed in with papers  file, post it notes and paper clips because they serve as little reminders of why I work.  Of course I work to pay my bills, feed and clothe myself.  But I also work to fund my vacations, gifts for the kids in my life, and the care of my pets.

On Friday I listed a post from my bloggy friend @ChrystinaNoel as one of my favorite posts from the previous weeks #FlashbackFriday.  Her post was one of the most fun and interesting ones I had read in a long while.  I enjoyed it so much that I decided to do my very own post like her's.  So here goes.

Want More Joy? Stop Doing These 3 Things.

A little while ago I did one of those personality tests.  I don't remember the all of the results.  But I do remember that one of my primary personality types is Melancholy.  My hommies Merriam and Webster define Melancholy as depressed in spirits.  I know what your thinking Chasing Joy, Melancholy, no way.  But, I have to say I was not surprised.  I actually find it to be quite accurate.  If I am not careful my thoughts do tend veer off track and away from the happy place, toward worry, self doubt, and even envy   This is why my focus must remain on Chasing Joy.

Make Your Mark & Win $25

videoWhy do we do the things that we do?  Why do we try hard at work, invest time and or money in charity, step in to be mentors, take on the role of parents, write books, blogs, and music?  Because we all want to have an impact, influence and create a legacy of some sort.  We want to be memorable.  We want to Make our mark.

Some of us want to leave a huge mark and imprint on society and with our peers.  We want to be known maybe even famous. We want to touch the masses.  Nothing wrong with that.  Other's of us want to leave a small mark.  We focus primarily on our friends and family.  With the desire to touch their lives in a lasting way.  While shying away from any type of notoriety, choosing to stand in the shadows playing the role of supporter.  Nothing wrong with that either.

I think I fall somewhere in the middle.  As a kid my friends and I would discuss being rich and famous when we grew up.  I was always onboard for the rich part but the famous part was not really part of my plan.  I definitely feel good when I know I have done something to make my mark within the bounds of friendships or when I have been there for a family member.  That is truly fulfilling.  But a funny thing happened when I started this blog.  The vast power of the Internet has allowed me to reach people from other parts of the world. Chasing Joy has helped me to develop some cyber relationships that allow me to leave a bit of a bigger mark by letting my focus grow a little wider than just friends and family.

Making My Mark at the Joy of Giving Charity Event
There are times when I feel this whole blog thing is just a little online diary and not all that important to anyone but me.  But then I will get an email from a reader saying how much the can relate to what I'm saying.  Or, a friend tells me during a conversation how much they like what I'm doing.  Or, when I am able to encourage readers and brands to come together for a charitable cause that leads to over 136 articles of clothing, shoes and accessories being donated to women transitioning from welfare to work.   When these things happen, I realize that this blog is allowing me to make my mark.

So, how are you making your mark?  Are you more focused on making a powerfully focused small mark on your friends and family, directing your time and attention to them? Perhaps your focus is on casting a wider mark on your community through charitable work within your church, sorority, or by being a mentor?  Or maybe you are leaving your mark in a really big way by writing that book, speaking at that event, or giving that sermon?  No matter big or small the mark you make is lasting and important.

The people from Lexus know this and want to reward you for it.  Using the hashtag #makeyourmarkES, Lexus wants you to share how you make your mark.  When  you post on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, FourSquare, or Socialcam with the hashtag #makeyourmarkES you can enter to win a $25 American Express gift card.

Use the Raffelcopter form below to enter the contest.  The contest ends on Friday 01/18 at 11:59pm.  Come back for a special Saturday post 1/19 to find out who the winner is.

I can't wait to hear how your #MakeYourMarkES.

January #ChasingJoy Twitter Chat Recap: Resolutions & Goals

Yesterday we had the January twitter chat.  It was great.  Lot's of interaction, we had over 320 tweets. I made some new twitter friends too.

Our topic was starting the new year right.  We discussed resolutions,  why to make or not make them, what they were and how we are doing with them, the difference between goals and resolutions and what some of our goals for 2013 are.

Here are the highlights:

Feel free to jump in and answer any of the questions above.  Did you set resolutions or goals for 2013? Do you feel there is a difference between goals and resolutions? If you did make a New Year's Resolution how is it going since we are a week into 2013?

#FlashbackFriday: Running Towards Joy

It's the first flashback of the new year!  How are you doing with your resolutions if you made any?  Do you feel like the new year gave you a fresh start?  Well be talking about your answers to these questions and more this Sunday Jan. 6th at the #ChasingJoy twitter chat.  I hope you will join in.  Use hashtag #ChasingJoy at 4pm EST.

I was excited to see so many people link up for last weeks flashback.  Here were my favorites:
10 Confessions of an Obsessed Blogger was completely relatable to an obsessed blogger such as myself.  4 Funny Sings I Had "Mommy Brain" is a really good Vlog that has me wondering how is it that I've had mommy brain without being a mommy.  Excuse Me, Do You Have Any Milk really made me laugh and put a smile on my face.  It is proof that not all kids are wasteful.

My Flashback this week, Running Towards Joy is about when I spent a lot of money on Brooks running sneakers.  I am proud to say that I did indeed run the 5k.  I had to walk some of it but I finished.  Sometimes I think I'll try it again.  Other times I  think my knees wouldn't appreciate it.  :-)

If you are new this is how #FlashbackFriday works.  First, if you haven't already, check my favorites from last week's Flashback. Second, Check out my Flashback post for this week. Third, pick out your link and add it below.  Link to any post you like of any theme you want.  Then, if you want post a link to your Flashback post on the Chasing Joy Facebook Page so more Joy Chasers can read it.  Use the hashtag #FlashbackFriday or #FBF on twitter to promote your Flashback posts.  Lastly,  check out AT LEAST TWO other flashback posts.  I suggest the two links before your post to make it easy.  If you link up early be sure to come back and checkout those who join the linky after you.   Please leave a comment below saying why you selected your Flashback post and what you thought about the other Flashback posts.

The Joy of Unconventional Resolutions

Me and Hurty rang in 2013 chillin, no makeup, hair undone
Happy New Year Joy Chasers!!!

Everyone, OK not everyone, but lots of us are setting resolutions for 2013.  Some of us are off to a great start while others of us have already had a cookie, cigarette, or spent money online shopping and will have to start over tomorrow.

I have a few things I want to focus on in 2013.  They are a little different from the typical resolution but they will be challenging nevertheless.  Here goes (of course it's a list, you know I love lists):

  • Continue my resolution from 2012 to leave my house every day.  Sometimes I still have to push myself to get out there and have a life.
  • Continue with a resolution I've been making for almost a decade, to stop doing things I don't want to do.  It is getting easier.  But this saying No thing is really something that constantly requires practice.
  • I will not go on any diet or new fitness/eating plan for at least the first quarter of the year.
  • I will not step on a Scale.  Now this one and the no dieting go together.  I'm honestly scared to death of them.  They feel backwards because resolutions are often about dieting, exercising and giving up sweets.  These are things I've tried and focused on for years now and have only watched the scale go up.  Mental Note watching the scale does not prevent it from going up*  I want to learnt to trust myself, accept myself, and love myself outside of any sort of wellness plan and how well I'm sticking to it.  Now I still believe I should treat my body as my temple.  I just want to do it naturally and intuitively instead of being on some sort of plan.  I would like to have these be year long resolutions but I will focus on just the first quarter of the year and see if I want to stick to it or not.
What are your plans for 2013?  Do you make resolutions?  If so, are any of them unconventional?
